A slide show tribute to Rosalie and friends, hers and mine, some here, some gone on. It covers forty-five years of shooting pictures for me and a lifetime of singing for Rosalie. The second slide isn't clear enough to show Rosalie and Nancy Stringfellow, for whom the song is made, and so much of her work acknowledges, looking out the big window at Querencia, the home place on Grimes Creek, in Idaho, where their hearts are, and will stay. Rosalie will be 75 soon, and it's good because if, as some seem to believe, she has gone on herself, then someone should call all those people expecting her to show up on tour next month and give them the unfortunate news. Otherwise, here's an example of the treat those audiences are in for. There is more about the video and the people in it at www.jdlarge08.wordpress.com Here are the lyrics to the song, for teachers: Song for Daughters-Mama Sing your songs to keep away the night Draw the curtain, light the fire The candles glimmer and perfume of pine and roses fills the room Outside, the cold stars shine The books you loved are waiting on the shelves, The wine is poured, The table set The curtains drawn across the pane to keep out the sound of wind and rain Outside, the cold stars shine But the wind is rising and you've got to go Clouds are running races in the sky The treetops toss, the wind is riding high The stars are calling, calling No arms can hold you in a warm embrace The place you want is not this place You want the winds of time against your face You want the wild rain falling Outside the cold stars shine, And you are theirs, not mine. Like some old gypsy woman, with her face turned toward the fire I seek the truth in the eyes of those who hear. 'Cause it lies in the eye of a lover, or of a fool or of a liar, and assembles in the heart of a silent tear chorus Mama you got it right when you said no one would ever hold me, I'd be walkin' on the wind 'til the day I die. But nobody ever bought me, Mama, nobody ever sold me, And I'm gonna stand until I fall, life is to live, death comes to us all and my friend the wind is teaching me to fly, I can fly, Mama, I can fly. And the truth will always show you more than just one face, my friend Ah, the faces, they never stay the same, And in the time it takes to turn, your very world might end, You might stand there naked and alone without your name. Mama you got it right when you said no one would ever hold me, I'd be walkin' on the wind 'til the day I die. But nobody ever bought me, Mama, nobody ever sold me, And I'm gonna stand until I fall, life is to live, death comes to us all and my friend the wind is teaching me to fly, I can fly, Mama, I can fly. Now the ghost has showed me beauty that comes from the heart of song, He taught me to hold my heart inside my eye, And my Mama taught me not to be afraid to be alone, And I learned by myself that it cleans your soul to cry. Chorus http://www.rosaliesorrels.com/external/gallery.aspx Thanks and Farewell to Utah Phillips for his photo from his Memorial site. Thanks for the home page photo from Rosalie's site. Jun 9, 2008 - That is so good, I thought I saw a picture of myself in there somewhere. I was there in spirit. I know that.
