Sonu Niigaam (as he prefers his name to be spelt) is to be part of a world's first. In a first of its kind recording, the city of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, an elite 80 member outfit, has joined with India's leading vocalist, Sonu Niigaam, to create a unique first of its kind album, Rafi Resurrected. The album was spawned from a discussion over two years ago between composer / arranger for the Orchestra, Tim Pottier, and an Indian friend. As a result, Tim became interested in Indian film music, particularly Mohammad Rafi. Over the course of the next year, in an effort to find material that could be played by a symphony orchestra, Pottier listened to dozens of Rafi songs. In the end, he chose the 18 songs that appear on the album, these were performed at a show in Birmingham early April, last year. The CBSO then approached Saregama with the vision of releasing an album. The company took the concept a step further. To bring a special magic to the album, they requested the one person who does the best rendition of Mohammad Rafi and considers him to be his 'spiritual Guru', - Sonu Niigaam, who seems to have a karmic connection with 'His' Rafi Saab. The CBSO parts were recorded in Birmingham and from April 18 at Empire Studios, the results of that will be dub by Sonu in Mumbai. Sonu is as enthusiastic about the project as Saregama, although he has refused to cover songs by Mohammad Rafi on several occasions. "I share Saregama's vision of taking Indian music to a higher platform through endeavours like this," says Sonu. "It is time due recognition was given to Rafi Saab who is like my unseen father in the Heavens and whom I revere like a son does." Rafi Resurrected is an 18 song musical feast that bring for the first time a symphonic interpretation of Indian film music. The songs include such treasures as: Yaad Na Jaaye Beete Dinon Ki from Dil Ek Mandir. The ever popular Tareef Karoo Kya Uski from Kashmir Ki Kali, Pathar Ke Sanam from the film of the same name,as well as the absolutely brilliant Tum Jo Mil Gaye Ho from the film Hanste Zakhm.

Aug 18, 2008 - I never liked Sonu Nigam but now I seem to like him after listening this. Maybe earlier I found his voice too childish, but ofcourse it suited the small boyish chocolaty heroes like Saif Ali Khan or Salman Khan (initially ofcourse) but it looked so bad on Sanjay Dutt, Sunny Deol and other macho heroes.

Aug 28, 2008 - I do not think Sonu is within 60% of Rafi Sahab but i tip my hat in respect to him. Kudos Sonu for honouring the greatest. You have earned my respect as a person. I do think Javid Raza sings better though, but i will not blast Sonu. Good job

Stop comparing him with Rafi Saab and stop spreading that Rafiji was his mentor. Just having pictures taken doesn't prove that. IMDB this Chohan and u will find nothing, nada, zero, get over it, bye

Sep 7, 2008 - To mehboobachuan and his so call fan club. I posted several messages last night to show what a hoax it is to compare this idiotic voice of Mehbuba chuhan to Rafi saab and diss Sonu Nigam. All they are doing is promote mehbuba's music school. I send the following message to them and dare them to repost all my messages. They are even claiming that Sonu admits that this mehbuba is a better singer than him, what a load of crap. I request all Rafi Saab fans,Sonu fans to protest on mehboobfan videos
excusemekyare Says:
Sep 7, 2008 - Hi dumb ass fake shit, I dare you to repost all my messages. By deleting you have proved and confirmed that you r just a hoax hired by mehbooba chuhan to promote his music school. Shame on you, get rid of this pathetic videos and stop comparing him to Rafi Saab. You are disgusting.
remeshvanpuri Says:
Sep 11, 2008 - dis is a polite message to you, your atitude towards people and you replies in mesages are very abrupt and pathetic. infact people like you should not even listen to songs, you should not even think of commenting about rafi songs becuz you dnt have respect. first get respect then speak. you people should not cht like this u are ignorant and from here we understand that u can never be a music lover, comenter or fan. please watch how u speak, this is utube it worldwide, what will people thik of u?
excusemekyare Says:
Sep 12, 2008 - I can say that you do not have a right to breathe as all you have proven is a demitasse would fit your head like a sombrero. This is my logic and opinion about Mehbooba Chuhan's claim that he is a Rafi Chela and he has sung/composed in Bollywood on his site, where he has samples of two lines. If he was that great he would have been successful in Bollywood. I respect Rafi Saab, and therefore, can not stand such false claims. Sonu never claims such BS,and he is still a music student. Now get lost.

remeshvanpuri Says:
Oct 22, 2008 - please check out MEHBOOB CHOHAN the student of the legendary singer mohammed rafi
johntabbot Says:
Nov 4, 2008 - you're right, ...I thought something was missing too, but just couldn't put my finger on it
londoniran Says:
Nov 4, 2008 - as you will know that Rafi Sahib was a good tabla player too since it is the tabla that gives a lift and map to the song. also if there is tabla then there is no need for a conductor. the concerts lacked the salt in the curry since there was no tabla.
johntabbot Says:
Nov 4, 2008 - Maybe they'll get it better next time. Its a good start. Its not that easy for a full fledged western orchestra to conform to indian styles of music. Its a nice experiment. I wish though next time he would speak in English, rather than mixing hindi and english together. He needs to improve in his presentation skills too. He lacks alot in that regard...he's a bit jittery sometimes, but pretty good singing
911ness Says:
Dec 8, 2008 - I don't agree. Sonu can change his voice and style to fit any actor including Sanjay Dutt and Sunny Deol.. just listen to 'marhaba' or 'chal kudiye' 'apne' and many Akshay Kumar songs like 'mera yaar dildar' 'jaane waale jaane waale' etc. Of course, he does the voice of chocolatey heroes best..but he brings out the maturity in his voice in songs like humein jab se mohabbat, mujhe raat din, mannata, etc. He has the most versatile voice today..
graphikamaal Says:
Dec 8, 2008 - Yes, I do agree that he is the most versatile singer today. I did say that 'EARLIER' I didn't like his voice but now I seem to like him, he has off late sung a few extremely beautiful songs and I wouldn't mind them putting on the same shelf as Rafi Sahab's songs in my collection. However, I would still prefer Kishoreda kind of voice on Sunny Deol or Sannjay Dutt and not Sonu Nigam or even Rafi Sahab.
911ness Says:
Dec 8, 2008 - I understand where you're coming from..I just disagreed with the part where you said it "looked so bad on...macho heroes" I don't think it looked that bad..just that Vinod Rathod's voice is better suited for Sanjay like Udit Narayan's is for Sunny Deol. You might want to check out some of Sonu's older songs like zindagi maut na banjaye..he sang many gems back in the day too
graphikamaal Says:
Dec 8, 2008 - Yes, I love the songs that you mention and also I love Ye Dil Deewana from Pardes. BTW, I am a lover of retro songs, mostly from 1948 to 1965 when Rafi was in his prime, so I guess you are totally wrong when you say you know where I come from but I do love many of Kishoreda's gems too.
